Tomorrow, When the War Began

Tomorrow, When the War Began

by John Marsden

This week I have been reading Tomorrow, When the War Began. This starts off with a brother and a sister wanting to go camping with some mates. Then they ask their parents and their parents say yes. They get ready and they were planning to leave at eight o'clock.

The 1,000 year old boy by Ross Welford

I have continued to read this book it is a very good book because there is a brave kid (Alfie). He is determined to find this life Perl (a life Perl is a thing when you crack it open and put it in your blood you will never age again) and he races on his friends (Aiden) grandpa's boat to cocktel island where he and his mam hid the life Perl. He meets his person who was talking to his school about this archeologist dig on cocktel island. The archeologist found the Perl and gave it back to him. I think it is a really good book and I think that you should read this book. Overall I give this book a 9/10.

Tales of the Peculiar by Ransome Riggs

This week I am excited to be reading a new book in the Miss Peregrine Series. It is called Tales of the Peculiar by Ransome Riggs. I have really enjoyed this series because it is jam-packed full of action, adventure and suspense. Although I have not read very much of this book, I can already see that this book is different to the others. The series is about an extraordinary group of children who each have peculiar talents and traits. For example, Emma can light a fire with her hands, Olive is lighter than air, Millard is invisible and Jacob can see the dreaded Hollowgasts. The children are protected by the watchful Miss Peregrine, but get into some real trouble in the series as they fight for survival against the evil Hollows.

This new book has been written as an extension of the series to explain some of the folklore surrounding the world of peculiarity. From what I can gather so far, this new book is a collection of stories that explains the existence and history of the peculiar people of the world. After scanning through the contents page, I cannot wait to read about ‘The First Ymbryne’,’The Girl who Could Tame Nightmares’ and ‘The Man who Bottled the Sun’, to name a few. I am expecting these stories to be full of surprise and excitement.

Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children

I have read up to page 211 of my book which is in the middle of Chapter 8. Jacob was on the other side of the island all day in the loop telling the children about mobile phones and computers. When he returns to his father later that night, he hears about the dead sheep across the hill. People suspect that Jacob is the one who killed the sheep as he was missing all day. The next morning Jacob woke up before his dad and went back to the house. He searched for Emma but was confronted by Miss Peregrine who took him to a private place. She gave him a small lecture about what he had been telling the children. The children had been going on about how they wanted to leave the loop to see what Jacob had been talking about.

In R3 we have been learning how to make an inference, figure out the main idea and identifying the important parts of a text. I think that I am good at identifying the important parts of the text by finding what the writer is trying to tell you.

Divine Madness by Robert Muchamore

This week I  have been reading Divine Madness by Robert Muchamore. The latest  scene that I have read in this book is when Lauren and James are at school and a new girl walks into class. Her name is  Melanie and she was a 'Pommy'. When it was time for recess, Melanie walks up to Lauren because apparently  Lauren was being 'mean to her' and she punched her in the face. Lauren did the same thing back. When Lauren punched her Melanie walked up to the teacher and told on her . The teacher approached Lauren and said "No punching people." This made me feel very angry because Melanie didn`t get into trouble, but Lauren did. This is a very interesting book and I suggest this book for 13 year olds and up to 16 because it is action packed and violent in places.

The things that I have been learning in R3 are: making an inference, finding the main idea, summarising. I am good at finding the main idea but I need to work on putting more information into it.

Caesar the war dog

This week I am still reading Caesar the War Dog and it is a really good book because it is interesting. I am at the part where Ben and his team have found Dr. Park in the cave, where they thought he would be. Little did Ben know that Josh's sister Maddie had already told the bully where Dr Park was. This was a problem because it was top secret information and Josh shouldn't have told anyone this.  What will happen next ...... I think they might get caught by the Taliban.

I would rate this book A 9/10 because it has interesting parts and boring parts . The reading skills I have learned to use in R3 are: To summarise and to make thick and thin questions when reading. I think I can do these well.

Wizard of Once - Twice MAgic by Cressida Cowell

In this story there's not much happening but Bodkin is saying to Wish that they need to get in cupboard because they need to stay safe. I think they are in danger but I am not sure why?  Once they are in the cupboard,  they have to use a spell and figure out what the password is. Finally, they learn that it is 'U-N-L-O-C-K'.

I'm not going to say why they got put in there because I'm not giving spoilers away.

I think the book could include a bit more action at the start so it kinda hypes you up, but other than that it is really good .

Diary of a wimpy kid The Long Haul

I am reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid - The Long Haul and it is a good book to read. It is about a family that puts a boat in the water to have fun with their kids. They have the best time in the boat and then they pull the boat out. When they are going back to the house, they get a flat tyre on the way home and this happened because the boat was too heavy.   After they get home and they made a hole in the boat and they fix it. That is the end of the story
.

The Trunk

I am reading The Trunk and I am up to Chapter Four. Charlie and his family go to the new neighbours' house to meet them. Charlie went to look in the window before they knocked on the door. When he looked through, Charlie saw the new neighbours were eating raw meat like they haven't eaten in years. It was weird that they were eating like animals.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs (Miss Peregrines)

This week I am reading Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I have read up to page 43 which in in the middle of chapter two. So far my book is about a boy named Jacob who spends a lot of time with his grandpa and he tells him about the war and the peculiar children he lived with in a home, safe from the monsters when he was growing up.  He believes his grandpa at first but then remembers what adults said to him and stopped believing as he got older.
When he was at work trying to get himself fired,he got a call from his grandpa who was telling him that the monsters had found him. Jacob did not believe him but was concerned he may have lost it so his friend Ricky picked him up. As they drove past the houses a man turned and stared with white eyes and Jacob assumed he was blind. The monster had attacked his grandpa and before he died he told Jacob to go to the island and stay safe before they monsters got him too. I am enjoying my book so far and it is very thrilling.

In R3 this week we have been learning how to write a summary to improve our writing skills and use only the important parts of a story or text.

The 78-story tree house movie opening night by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton

I've started a book called The 78 Storey Treehouse - Movie Opening Night by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton. So far the book is all about Terry and not about Andy. Why you maybe wondering? This is because the director, called Mr Big Shot, does not like Andy. So far I'm up to page 164-165 in the middle of chapter 7. Andy felt left out so he went to Andy Land and in the 6th chapter, Andy Land is in trouble because of all the Andy clones. The first Andy tells them about the treehouse movie and the other Andy's yell "yeah!". The real Andy says they are not in the movie because Terry is the movie star and that they are replaced by a monkey. No one really cares because they say they like Terry better then themselves.
my favourite bit is when  Andy goes to Andy Land and calls out to himself. This is funny because he is literally talking to himself.

Two Weeks With the Queen by Morris Gleitzman

Two Weeks With the Queen

I am reading Two Weeks With the Queen and my favourite part of the book is when the two brothers  don't get along very much, so the other brother starts telling gross, killing, blood dripping stories and the other brother starts getting the shivers and can't speak he is so frightened. I think this is funny. I don't really like the book very much.

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children

This book is about a boy who is trying to find out about the truth of his grandfather's death. All he knows is that his grandfather's eyes were taken. To find out about what happened Jacob goes to Ireland to see the Peculiar children. He found some suspicious clues in an old abandoned house before he was found and taken hostage by the children who lived there. Miss Peregrine knows straight away that he is Abe's grandson. Before long they sit down for dinner then Jacob heads home, leaving the loop of September 3rd, 1940.

This week in R3 we are learning about making inferences that are using the clues in the text to find out what the author hasn't told you in the story.

Caesar the war dog by Stephen Dando-Collins

This week I am reading the book Caesar the War Dog and it is at a really good part where this girl Hanna's dad is missing in Afghanistan. Ben and Caesar are called to Afghanistan to help find him and bring him back to Australia. Ben's son Josh had found something out that might help Ben and his team find Hanna's dad. Josh found out that Mr Park might be in a cave at the top of the mountain that only has two entry ways: one is out the front of it and is guarded by the people that had taken him and the other way they could get in was a way that was 100 meters under dragon lake. They are working out a way to get in that and trying to get Caesar under as well.

I would rate this book 10/10 because it is getting interesting.

The Killing

If you like to read action books this book series is for you!!!!!! I have read up to book four in the Cherub series and what I have noticed is that each book has a new character and new drama. In book four they have been talking about how James and Lauren's mum died. James and his friends went on an egg hunt because they were sitting around doing nothing and when they came back from the egg hunt, James went up to Lauren and stole her eggs and jumped on them. I think he did this because she was being nasty to him and he wanted to get her back. In the last chapter of book three,  James cheated on Kerry and Lauren saw the whole thing happen and now James is know trying to get Lauren to not tell Kerry about the kiss. I hope that Kerry and James break up because Kerry is not a nice person towards James .

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

If you like to read about World War Two and what it was like to live in Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler, then this might be the book for you! Wolf by Wolf follows the story of a brave young girl (Yael) whose mission is to assassinate Hitler. What makes this book really interesting is that it actually changes the course of History. Ryan Graudin has created a world where Adolf Hitler is supreme ruler after defeating the Allies in World War Two. Fear and control is part of everyday life in a Nazi world.

Yael belongs to an underground organisation and she has a special power: she can transform her body to look like another person. This is the result of Nazi experiments that she was subjected to when she was a young girl. Her mission is to win the annual Axis Race - a motorbike challenge where competitors race from one side of the world to another. It is a dangerous mission as each of the competitors are just as hungry to win. Yael's life is constantly under threat and she struggles to find an ally in the group. The book keeps you guessing right to the end and the outcome of the race is truly unexpected.

THE TRUNK BY S.CAREY

The book I am reading at the moment is The Trunk and it is confusing me because one of the characters called Charlie can hear a girl singing through the walls and she makes contact with him be saying "It's me...". He gets a chill down his back. He tried to speak but he couldn't, he cleared his throat and asked, "Who are you?". She told him her name was Sonya. He doesn't know who that is. He thought it was his neighbour who he calls 'stick woman'.
I think he will tell his parents and they might not believe him. When the father researched their new neighbours, he found that he was a scientist and I think its important because they also have a crocodile in the backyard. They could be experimenting on them or the crocodile could get out.

Caesar the War Dog by Stephen Dando-Collins

This week I am reading the book Caesar the War Dog. I would give it a  9/10 because it is good in some parts but bad in others . It is about a dog that gets lost in Afghanistan for  six months and then Ben (the owner) gets a call and they tell Ben they have found him. Ben flies over there and goes to get Caesar. Now I am reading that Ben and Caesar go the Afghanistan for a mission to go and find Hanna's dad.

In R3 this week we have been looking at non-fiction books and writing a short summary about it. I think I do well in writing short summaries.

500 Minutes Of Danger By Jack Heath

The book 500 Minutes of Danger is a short story book and I have read two  stories so far. One of the stories I read is called 'Acid Rain'. The kids are on a excursion at an abandoned mine and there was a explosion. Afterwards it started raining acid and it was coming through the roof, so they used plastic tables to protect themselves. When the rain finally stopped there was a big hole in the road. It was confusing but I got it in the end.

Try Time

In the last three weeks I have been reading Billy Slater Try Time. The book is about a kid that loves to play footy and watch the games on TV. At the start of the book, Josh starts to play football and in the first game he played really well. Then he started the second game and Josh started to drop the ball every time so coach benched him.

In R3 this week we  have been learning about sequencing.

Wizard of Once by Cressida Cowell

I have finished The Wizard of Once and the book ended like this: the Master Enchanter, who is Xar's Dad, along with Xar, had to unite and try and stop Queen Sychorax putting Wish into slavery. In the meantime, (while Xar and The master Enchanter  were going to save wish) Wish's eye patch came off and her eye had a burst of magic coming out of the left eye. After this, Xar and his father put the eye patch back on and Xar managed to give the magical sword back to Wish.

My opinion on the story is that if people like fantasy and adventure, they will like this book. There are excellent diagrams and detail and this helps when you read because it gives me an image of what is happening and what the setting is like. It helps me understand the situation a bit more.

The Recruit by Robert Muchamore

In R3 this week I read the book The Recruit. In the book I read that James' mum died and that James is at the camp now. He found out that his step-sister Lauren is not staying at the training camp -  his uncle Ron is taking Lauren with him. James hates him and that's what I read this week.

In the story Mt Kasatochi Blows its Top it begins with two boys named Jonno and Matt. Jonno is having a dream about Mt Kasatochi erupting. We read this story and had to put it in the right sequence of events.

1000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford #2

This week I read the book The 1000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford. I have read up to page 304 and I am really enjoying this book. In this part of the book,  a book was stolen and they thought that Alfie took the boo. In  reality he ran out the back gate to get away somehow and his friend Roxy fake fainted so Alfie could getaway. I like this because it builds up the suspense for the book so you keep on reading the book.

The reading skills we have been using in class are sequencing and summarising. We have been reading 'Kasatochi Blows its Top' and we have been trying to figure out where the place was. I have been practising this by doing activities in R3. My goal for next week is to get to part 4 of the book. I can achieve this by reading every day for at least 10 minutes so I can get to the new part of my book.Image result for the 1000 year old boy

The Recruit

I have been continuing to read the book The Recruit. This week I have got up to page 230. Now James is on his mission - this is the most important mission in Cherub history, but James does not know that. They are going on a mission to get rid of hippies because they have been ruining the place they live by building huts and trashing it. I am wondering if they will actually get rid of them because they have not been successful so far.

In R3 the skills we have learnt are how to sequence our paragraph and what order we should write in so it makes sense and so you don't mix it up. We did this with the story 'Mount Kasatochi Blows its Top.'

Class A - The Cherub Series by Robert Muchamore

This week I am reading Class A - The Cherub Series by Robert Muchamore. It is the second book in the Cherub Series. So far, James is still at Cherub headquarters and his sister (Lauren) has gone back with her dad Ron. Jame`s friends started to ask how his mum died and James got really upset and he told his friends that he wanted to do something naughty, so they all went shoplifting. It probably wasn't the best idea.
They ended up going on the mission they were preparing for but they did the wrong thing and took cocaine during the mission. Then they were caught and sent back to Cherub headquarters. Their punishment was to do more training. For example, they had to run five laps, swim five laps and extreme exercising. It was horrible. Now, they are on holiday in  Miami and they are relaxing. James found out that Lauren didn't finish her training and that she came to see him. She stayed for a bit but had to go back to training.

In R3 this week we are learning how to put things in order. We are reading International Talk  Like a Pirate Day. We wrote down interesting facts verses not interesting facts.

The 117 Storey Treehouse by Terry Denton and Andy Griffiths

The 117 Storey Treehouse continued...

My prediction about this book is that Terry will be taken by the 'Story Police' because he is not a good enough narrator. I can see this on the cover. So far,  what I have been reading is that Terry wants to narrate the next book but he is awful at it. Mr Big Nose (editor) calls Andy and Terry and when they answered and Mr Big Nose said, "Let him narrate. OK?" says Andy.

This week we learned about pirates and we read about pirates in the past and modern day pirates. We used a  BME (Beginning, Middle End) chart to help us summarise. We are also doing a blog so we can talk about the books we read.

Weirdo 2 by Ahn Do

I read Weirdo 2 this week. It is about a boy who does weird things. His name is Weir Do. I have finished this book and I thought is was a really good, fun book. Some of the funny things that happened were: Weir was at a party and he made a rabbit/snake balloon. He called it a Snabbit. Another thing that was funny in the story was is that at the zoo, he was thinking about the animals he saw and he mixed them together. For example: Girafferoo, zelephant and a pandarilla.

In class I have been practising our summarising skills. We read about Chasing the Cheese and had to write down the main points.

Boy vs Beast 7- Battle of the Borders by Mac Park

Boy vs Beast 7 Battle of the Borders

by Mac Park

This week I am reading Boy vs beast  book 7

Wonder by R.J Palacio

This week I am still reading the book Wonder by R. J. Palladio I have read up to 301 and This book is written in sections. Mr. Tushman looked up at the audience at the assembly and said ''Be kinder than is necessary,'' he repeated. ''What a marvelous line, isn't it?" I think this was because he was trying to teach the children how to behave well.

The Face on the Milk Crate by Caroline Cooney

This week I am reading the book The Face on the Milk Crate by Caroline B. Cooney. I have read up to page 13, Chapter 2. This book is about a girl called Janie Johnson who loves collecting milk crates and takes them to school for Science. The Science teacher is Mr Brylowe. Looking at the cover of the book, I know it is a scary book and it is about a kidnapping. I like this book because is it an action book and scary. And it is very interesting.

The reading strategies we have been using in class are summarising and we have also read part of a book called A Monster Calls. We also watched the trailer and talked about what the monster looked like, linking it to the story. My reading goal for next week is to get to Chapter 4. I will try to read in Homeroom and at home.

Dog Man Lord of the Fleas by Dave Pilkey

Dog Man - Lord of the Fleas starts with a dog and a man who were walking along the side of the road when a car crashed into them. At the hospital, the doctors could see that the man's head was dying and the dog's body was dying, so they decided to join them together. They created Dogman. The book that I have been reading is good because it has action in it and it is a comic book.

In class we have been learning how to blog and the reading skills that we have been using includes visualising using descriptive language. We used the Don't tell me, show me strategy to try to create a scene. My example of this was: the engines were purring and they took off into the distance.

The Cloudchasers - Book 1 by Steven Hunt and David Richardson

For anyone looking to read a Young Adult's picture book, The Cloudchasers by S. Hunt and D. Richardson could be the book for you! The book is classified as a Dystopian text. This means that the plot actually explores real life social and political ideas that are set in a 'dark' world. I think this can be true for this book as it is set in a world where having an imagination is banned. The main character is a young girl called Alice, who is caught drawing pictures of the dragons she sees in the clouds. She knows that if she is caught again she will be sent away to have her mind 'cleared', so she escapes with her brother and a friend in a hot air balloon. As they explore other imaginative worlds, they realise they are being chased by The Catcher, whose aim is to bring them back to the bleak world of Bankertown. Alice is determined to find a way to restore freedom and imagination to the people of Bankertown, but will she be successful?

The Cloudchasers is the first book in a two-part series. The illustrations are very detailed and really help the reader to understand and feel what a world with no imagination could be like.

Tiny Timmy on Tour by Tim Cahill

This week in my book Tiny Timmy on Tour there have been many good ups and downs, but the one thing that the book has told me is to push through and keep going in life. The more you give, the the better it is in the long run. I have finished the book and it is a good book and I think others should read it. It is a funny short book that is about soccer.

Image result for tiny timmy on tourThe reading skills we have been using in class are to reread and use technical language when blogging. Also we have been using the Don't TELL me, SHOW me strategy. I have been practising in class by making one and sharing with a small group. Next week my goal is to read half of my new book and finish it by end of term. I can complete this by reading everyday for 25 minutes per night.
