My Sister Lives on the Mantlepiece by Annabel Pitcher

This week I finished reading My Sister Lives on the Mantlepiece by Annabel Pitcher. I thought it was a really interesting novel. This book is about how a young boy James and his family deal with the loss of his sister, Rose. She was killed in a bombing attack in London and has torn James’ family apart. James’ parents have split up, his father drinks a lot, his older sister has dyed her hair pink, and James is confused because he barely remembers his sister at all. As they start a new life in the country, James makes friends with a Muslim girl and is looking for ways to fit in in his new village. He and his older sister Jas miss their mum and will do anything to bring their parents back together – they even decide to enter the famous Britain’s got Talent – to try to get the attention of their parents. This book deals with some serious issues, and will certainly make you laugh and cry at the same time. I loved it!

This week in class, we have been using our visualising skills when we read about the Trunchbull in Roald Dahl’s Matilda. We had to identify the descriptive words and draw what we saw. Next week my reading goal is to read at least three chapters of my next text, The Recruit. I will try to read for at least 30 minutes a night to achieve my goal.
